Activities to help build understanding of complex, and often overwhelming, challenges facing impoverished communities and the engineer’s role in this process.
Step 1: Identify causes and effects of poverty – 15 min.
Divide students into their design teams (four to six people). Participants are to go through the case study and write down, on Post-It Notes, every cause and effect of poverty in the story. Each group should have between 25-50 notes, almost 1-2 per sentence. Help them get to that level of precision if they are not already there.
Tip: Suggest that they divide into two groups, with one responsible for analyzing the first half of the story, and the other the second half.
